We send our deep sympathy to the family of Michael Brown and the people of Ferguson. As Christians standing in solidarity with the oppressed in Palestine and Israel, we extend our solidarity to the African American community.

It does not escape our attention that local police officials involved have received military training from the Israeli Defense Forces: from Ferguson to Palestine, state violence against disenfranchised people is a universal injustice. We recognize that the devaluing of African-American lives built into the fabric of US government and society is mirrored in Israel’s unequal treatment of Palestinians.

We must reform systems that deny equal rights and opportunities to all people, regardless of their race, religion or gender. May our prayers and growing activism amplify the voices of the oppressed in our communities and in our world.
