Sabeel Toronto Conference Report

Date:
29 October 2005

A Call For Morally Responsible Investment: A Nonviolent Response to the Israeli Ocupation
Conference Summary - Toronto, Canada
October 26-29, 2005

Vision: We recognize the beginnings of a global movement on Morally Responsible
Investment and related economic strategies to bring a just peace in Israel-Palestine.
This will be the focus and locus of much related peace work in the coming years. Thus
Canadian Friends of Sabeel seeks to draw together at this conference churches, CROs
(Church Related Organizations) and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) working
for a just peace in Israel-Palestine to explore the emerging non-violent economic
strategies to achieve this end (including shareholder initiatives, partial divestment and
boycotts.) We are inspired to this effort by the call from Sabeel Ecumenical Center
Jerusalem for Morally Responsible Investment and we are responding to that call.

Mission: To reach out to organizational representatives of churches, CROs and NGOs
around the globe who are interested in learning about economic strategies as they
pertain to ending the Israeli occupation and promoting a just peace for Israel and
Palestine.

Objectives:
• To highlight the rationale – both moral and theological - for non-violent economic
responses to the occupation at this time
• To create an opportunity for educating and informing CROs and NGOs about these
non-violent responses
• To create an opportunity for these organizational representatives to network faceto-
face at the Conference
• To create, through workshop opportunities, the development of strategic
partnerships and alliances

Goals:
• An international conference that includes Europe and the global south.
• A conference for organizational representatives - international, national, regional -
welcoming local or regional branches of these organizations
• A planning committee and speakers who reflect the international nature of this
initiative
• An atmosphere of mutuality across diverse regional perspectives
• A conference that is church and CRO driven, while open to religious, ethnic and
secular groups working for peace
• Substantial time for workshops and networking
• An exploration of the diverse possibilities of response through education,
discussion and dialogue while fully engaging in discussion regarding the
challenges to economic responses; forward looking strategies based on openness
rather than debate
• A commitment to the theme: Morally Responsible Investment
- Morally: committed to justice
- Responsible: committed to non-violence
- Investment: focus on constructive and positive economic strategies

Location:
Toronto, Canada. This location should be accessible, dynamic and offer
freedom of speech and thought free from political pressure.

Date: October 26-29, Wednesday through Saturday.

Funding:
Through Registration fees, co-sponsorships and institutional grants
